Constructive gadfly

"NEW YORK - The New York Yankees grabbed center fielder Johnny Damon away from the rival Boston Red Sox, reaching a preliminary agreement Tuesday night on a $52 million, four-year contract.

Damon fills a double void for the Yankees, giving them a speedy center fielder who can cover ground and a leadoff hitter to top a star-studded lineup.

Bernie Williams' defense declined significantly over the past four seasons. And while Damon's arm is not much better, he does cover a lot of ground, which is important in Yankee Stadium."

This free market/agency has lost all sense of loyalty and ethics. The bidder and player alike are obsessed with greed but see it as a simple progression of supply and demand. Red Sox fans see it as Yankee vengeance and Damon's trust a dropped ball together with thumbing a nose at the fans.

I hate to see any improvement by the Yankees, and really am not a fan of the free agency system in MLB, but it's just the way things work now.

Unless and until the MLB gets smart enough to institute a NFL style revenue sharing system rather than the bogus system they have now, and unless and until they institute an NBA style salary cap/salary floor (or even the NFL style of same), things won't get better.

Baseball is a game of haves and have-nots.

The haves definitely include the Yankees, but after that it's hard to say for sure. Perhaps you could include the Red Sox, the Dodgers, the Mets and the Braves, or combinations there of, but even with those teams there's not a guarantee. Below those teams, well, it's pretty much the have-nots. Especially for teams like Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Florida, Tampa Bay, etc.

It's ruining the game slowly but surely, but there always seems to be just enough of an aberration (sp?) so that some mid-level team makes it into the playoffs, slides through enough to give us all a little hope, and send the signal that perhaps the game can make it past having the free-spending Yankees ruining the salary structure. Or at least we can hope.

I dont much care for either team (Red Sox or Yankees), but I find it amusing that the Yankees can vex the Sox fans so much!

Bite your tongue. If Manny walks, I'm thinking it will be to the Mets...
