Constructive gadfly

Live & Let Live

“Live and let live” is not an absolute. When Dirty Harry challenges his captive with “Make my day” and is counter challenged, then death is the result. If the Maryland snipers resisted arrest there would be no qualms if they were sent off in body bags. So with “let Muslims be Muslims” is prima-facie for religious freedom, yet does not mean they are free to hate, maim or kill. From the Dark Age to the Puritans, let Christians be Christians had to be qualified in face of fatal witch hunts and inquisitions, just as today in blowing up abortion clinics.

So, too, with sexual preferences: let them be. If a couple of the same gender wishes to be married let them be married by civil ceremony. If they want God’s acceptance and some religious denomination accepts this then so be it. As for the prominent religions that will not acknowledge such a union, then that is the privilege of the sect, rightly or wrongly; the couple should get on with their lives.

If they should still feel strongly about their religion, they can still practice it discreetly — a gadfly only makes the matter worse — for homosexuals must also recognize that others too are entitled to their religious beliefs. However, gays should journey to self-dignity on a political level and demand their rights as a citizen, whereas, the religious aspect will take generations.

Actually - not wanting to start an argument or anything - but anybody -is- free to hate. You do not have to like it, you do not have to agree with it, it may be racist, it may be religious - but they are still fully, 100% free to hate.

I think this article covers the freedom to hate. It just states that you aren't free to act upon that hate however you see fit. I personally feel the whole gay union subject is a non-issue. If "marriage" is defined as a union between a man and a woman, then they can't get married. I don't see why, however, that gays can't make a legal commitment to each other and receive the same sort of benefits. Why wouldn't we encourage committed, gay relationships?

Just as I don't want to see gays all over each other in public, I dislike the same from heterosexual couples. I think if the homosexual community was less "in your face" people wouldn't feel as repelled by them. People are people. What you do in the bedroom should stay there. Why make an issue about it? I am not saying that anyone should hide who they are. I just don't understand things like gay pride parades. Do you have to be proud of it? Try just being comfortable in your own skin. If you can do that, others will be comfortable with it too.

I agree that the religious aspect of the subject will take generations...hopefully.

JillUser, they make an issue about it to raise awarness. Just look at how much better gays are accepted in our society now compared to just 20 years ago. That acceptance came about by making people more aware of them.

You're even allowed to hate your parents, just don't kill them!
