An academic freedom case is pending because a primary level teacher said in a classroom when asked about peace demonstrations in town: “While driving by I honked my horn to held up signs that said ‘Honk for Peace’… It is important for people to seek peaceful solutions to a problem before going to war and that we train kids on the playground to be mediators in seeking out peaceful solutions.”

So what is the case against academic freedom here? Is the teacher being prosecuted for teaching peace? For Honking at the demonstrators? Or for expecting kids to be able to work out their differences amongst themselves?

I guess I'm just saying that your article did pique my interest, but then didn't answer any of the questions it brought up.

I was going to ask for a link as your article is very sketchy, and I have many of the same questions that Parated does.  This is the tickler, now where's the beef?

One parent complained and insisted that the principal order the teacher, Deborah Mayer, of Indiana, "to rerfrain from teaching peace in class." To avoid insubordination charges, Mayer complied. The principal went even further by spinning off a school wide policy: "We absolutely do not, as a school, promote any particular view on foreign policy related to Iraq." And then promptly cancelled "Peace Month" the school was holding. In the end, Mayer's contract was not renewed.
