Constructive gadfly

Much has been said about eavesdropping and email snooping; it has caught my attention that snail mail is now a target — opened and then green-taped with the message “Opened for Border Protection” with the seal of Homeland Security affixed. I hope this is rare and that it will not filter down to our troops and their families’ mail.

I am sure that the troops recieve instructions about not revealing information in letters but I do know that in WWII the soldiers letters were routinely monitored. My grandma has letters that my grandpa sent with black marked through things that the Army blocked out.

I do think that it's a slippery slope. I am all for national security but I think if the government starts taking liberties with our rights, it leads to a place we don't want to go. I don't want to live in a police state where there is no privacy in the name of security.

I agree wholeheartedly.

You're right about routine militarycensorship--especially overseas mail.

I'm less concerned about what the soldiers are writing in snail mail than I am about what they're saying on one of the myriad cell phones or cell phone equivalents they're using in Iraq. OPSEC? What's that?

Yes, it makes little sense to censor email and letter writing and let them say whatever on their cell phones.
